Saved by the GPS

Sometimes having a GPS (Global Positioning System) with you can really save you. This is a type of device that you can take with you on your ATV to help you determine your exact location. The GPS does not send out signals…it's actually the other way around – the GPS receives signals and then helps you find out your location. Usually, the GPS works best with a compass. Yes, remember a compass…a device that we have forgotten how to use since the computer and Internet became so wildly popular? Yeah…those still work. When you're lost, the most important things are the map, the compass, the GPS and don't forget the cell phone (if there's coverage around the track).

Having a GPS and a compass is extremely useful if and when you're lost. Don't be surprised, even for experienced ATV rider, getting a little lost is common. This is because some trails are not as well-marked as others and you might lose your sense of direction even if you're a really experienced ATV rider. Most of the time, you'll come armed with a nicely printed map that a guide or hotel will provide you. However, if you don't have it, dropped or lost it, you might be in a little bit of a spot if you don't know where you are. Remember, your sense of direction and memory goes out the window when you're a little panicky.

If you place the GPS on your ATV, you can switch it to alert you when someone attempts to take it without your permission or steal it. A great theft-prevention device. It works somewhat like a burglar alarm system you put on your home. If the device is switched on and someone moves the ATV that the device is attached to or turns up the engine of your ATV, it will start calling pre-programmed phone numbers. You can set the numbers with the GPS provider.
