Youth ATV riding basics
June 5 , 2007
It's easy to get a youth interested in ATVs – if you're a parent and have been racing or riding your ATV actively with your friends, your youth may even have asked you for an opportunity to try out ATV riding as well. ATV riding is actually an extremely safe sport and recreational activity and we shall take the opportunity to list down the important points about starting your youth off on ATV riding. Before anything else, especially before you go ahead to buy your youth his or her own ATV, you have to get your youth enrolled into ATV safety classes. If your youth have friends who are also interested in riding ATVs, make arrangements with the parents for them to get enrolled together. This is an important point that you should not overlook or underestimate. The foundation for safe youth ATV riding should be laid down right right from the start. Friends are great influences on your youth and if you know that your youth is mixing around with other ATV riding youths, make it a point to get to know who your youth is riding ATV with, their background to ensure that the won't be a bad influence on your youth. Sometimes it's hard to gauge whether another youth will be a bad influence on your teen or not; so, another stance you can take is to ride ATV with your youth – a chance to show your youth the ropes to ATV riding and also to gauge his or her skill level. We cannot stress the importance of setting down the rules of ATV riding before purchasing a youth ATV. Sit down for a heart-to-heart talk, put down all the rules and make it known to your youth that you are going to take drastic actions in the event that they break the rules. If the youth is given the chance to discuss the rules with you or even provide their feedback on it, chances of them obeying the rules are higher…after all, they helped make the rules and youth don't often break their own rules…or at least, they'll try harder to obey them. Not only should you try to get to your youth's ATV riding friends – if it's possible, get connected with the youth friends' parents as well. Organize a trip or a get-together so that there can be constant communication and feedback among each other. Whatever it is, youths should never be allowed to ride ATVs all alone without adult supervision…not until they are completely confident with their ATV riding skills and YOU are convinced that they are good enough to ride alone. If you are in contact with other parents of your youth's friends, you can make arrangement with the parents for one of you to be there when your youths decide to ride ATVs at ATV trails or jungle trails….etc. And one last point that we have to make here is that never skimp on youth ATV riding protective gear. This is important so that personal injury is minimized in the unexpected event of a mishap. Whatever it is, give your youth your full parental support if they show interest in riding ATV or in taking ATV up professionally. Who knows what it lead to? |
